You're ready for diabetes to stop running the show…

…so it doesn’t hijack your life,

…so you can feel lighter and less stressed about diabetes

…so you can recognize what a great job you’re doing, even when diabetes goes sideways

Welcome to

Put Diabetes

In Its Place

An online course that allows you to get to diabetes calm.

Whether you’re new to this diagnosis or you’re a veteran and have been at it for years, you’re still thinking about diabetes too much… and it’s still too hard.

Here's what you're dealing with...

  • There are days when the numbers just don’t work and you feel defeated.

  • You can’t sleep well at night because you’re worried about having to be “on”

  • You feel unprepared when there’s a pump or CGM failure and the going gets rough

The truth is that there’s more to diabetes than just the numbers.

Hear from T1D parents who have taken the course:

Go from being overwhelmed to confident

Imagine if you could…

  • Feel less anxious about type 1 so you can be a sturdier parent to your T1D kid and a better caretaker to yourself

  • Ask for the support you need, instead of feeling alone and like you’re the only one who can keep your kid safe

  • Connect with your T1D kid about something other than diabetes

  • Feel like diabetes is riding sidecar in your life, even when there are the inevitable things that go wrong

Here’s what will change for you:

  • You’ll have a better understanding of how you can be more flexible around management so you’ll be more sane

  • You’ll take concrete steps to create change so you feel more in control of diabetes

  • You’ll take steps to get more connected around diabetes so you can share your experience with other people — even people who don’t have a kid with type 1! — so you won’t feel so alone

  • You’ll make room for some of the feelings you have about your child’s diagnosis so you’ll have more space for the relationships you want to have

Hi, I'm JoAnne

First and foremost, I’m a mom to T1D kids, just like you.  In fact, two of my three kids have type 1.

I’m also a therapist and experienced diabetes coach.  When diabetes came to our family,  I took my experience as a therapist and applied it to working with parents with type 1 kids. My passion is helping you get to diabetes calm.

What You’ll Get:

  • a new way of thinking

  • effective strategies to help you feel less stressed when you hit struggles with diabetes

  • robust course material that’s personalized for where you are in your T1D journey

  • 3 months of 1-on-1 asynchronous coaching about the diabetes issues that you’re facing right now.  That means you’ll have me in your back pocket for your T1D parenting challenges.

If you choose to upgrade, you also get:

  • 3 additional months of 1-on-1 asynchronous coaching

  • 6 months of 2x/month zoom meetings where you can get your questions answered face-to-face. Come to as many or as few of these as you want. Meetings are the 1st Wednesday of the month at 5:00p pst and the 3rd Friday of the month at 9a pst

  • Introvert support.  If you can’t come to a meeting or are feeling shy about asking your question, you can submit a question to me and I’ll answer it anonymously in the meeting for you to watch on replay.

How We’ll Do It

  1. You’ll register

  2. You’ll get access to course material immediately.  This includes a track for parents who are struggling with a recent diagnosis and a different track of material for more veteran parents who’ve been at this for a while.  You can check out both tracks and choose which one is right for you right now.  The tracks have a lot of overlapping material, but you’ll be able to experiment to see which exercises and lessons feel most helpful for you.

  3. You’ll start working on the material at your own pace.  Working through a lesson takes anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour.

  4. You’ll sign up for the private Facebook group where you’ll get your asynchronous coaching and introduce yourself.  Then, as questions come up for you about the course materials or if you want to engage in conversation about thoughts or feelings that come up, either about the material or about managing diabetes, you can post to the group.  You’ll get feedback from me regularly.

  5. And since we’re all on this journey together — and since we share so many of the same struggles —  you can talk to other Sweet Talk parents in that same Facebook group to get their thoughts and reactions.

  6. You keep all of the curriculum forever and you get to go back and do it again, as parenting diabetes and your feelings about it change.

  7. After your three (or six) months of the program is over, we will move you into an alumni Sweet Talk Facebook group.  Though I won’t weigh in there much, you’ll have the benefit and wisdom of other like-minded parents, parents who are equally invested in getting to diabetes calm.

  • On a gut level, you know that if you’re doing better with diabetes, your T1D kid will do better too. But there just hasn’t been time to take care of yourself. In this lesson, there will be an opportunity to think through your experience of having a diagnosis and type 1 kid. Using guided tools, you’ll be able to look at the complex feelings that have come up since your child was diagnosed.

  • You have the idea that your child’s Dexcom reading should be a straight line. Certainly, the swings you see often alarm you. In this lesson, we’ll look at some of the realities of diabetes IRL so you’ll have a better understanding of how well you’re actually doing with management.

  • In some way, you’ve been white-knuckling it ever since your child was diagnosed, trying to respond perfectly in every situation so you can get it all exactly right. In this lesson, you’ll look at how you can step into being more flexible with management so you’ll have more of a feeling that you’re in control of diabetes, instead of diabetes being in control of you.

  • With type 1 in your life, there are also extra parenting challenges. In this lesson, you’ll get a number of different parenting tools, plus a chance to apply specific tools to the diabetes dilemmas you’re facing right now.

  • One of the big worries we T1D parents have is how on earth our children will ever do this job on their own. In this week, you’ll watch a panel of three young adults with type 1 who will talk about their journey. Most parents watch and rewatch this one, folding in their kids and spouses. It’s inspiring! You’ll also work on integrating the work we’ve done throughout the course.

Some of the course lessons you’ll get in Put Diabetes in Its Place:

& many more…

Let me answer some questions you might have

  • Absolutely! We’ve designed this process so you get lots of support.

I’m available in several ways throughout the course to answer your questions. If you’ve purchased the basic course, you’ll be in a private Facebook group where I respond to posts several times a week. If you upgrade to the plus plan, you’ll be able to attend live zoom meetings over the course of six months. There, you can ask questions and get feedback and support face-to-face.

  • You’ll be expected to:

*Do the course work at the pace that works for you

*Be coachable: willing to take direction and try new things

*Be supportive and respectful of your fellow T1D parents

I have found that people who work the program and do the coursework all come away feeling calmer!

  • Once PDIP is over, most parents find that they feel much calmer about diabetes; they feel like they are able to manage diabetes differently, like they can take it in stride better. That said, after you’ve completed PDIP, you’re eligible to take Creating Change, a course designed to help you dive deep into creating the specific change you want to see in your relationship to diabetes. It’s a totally optional follow-up program

  • There are no refunds. If you have questions about whether the group is right for you before you register, reach out to JoAnne at joanne@diabetessweettalk.com prior to purchasing. I’m happy to talk to you about it.

Is this course for me?

It’s for you if…

  • you know that if you could relate differently to diabetes, you could take better care of your T1D kid — and you could relate better to the people in your life

  • you’re ready to have some control over diabetes, instead of feeling like it has control over you

you’re open to exploring new ideas about how to relate to diabetes

  • you’re interested in connecting to other parents of T1D kids to share experiences and learn together.

It’s not for you if…

  • you want more information and data about how to manage diabetes. This course offers a different perspective in your relationship to diabetes, rather than more of the management skills that you can get from your doctor or endocrinologist.

  • you are looking for private coaching.  (All coaching and Q&A happen in a group)

  • Please note:  This is a coaching group, designed to help parents gain skills around the emotional side of managing a T1D diagnosis.  This is NOT a therapy group.
